Soulful and
Funky to Tech and Electro house
|
| Like most DJ's
out there, Chris first got a taste of DJing in his mid teens. From
there it became an obsession. In the early days he was
playing bouncy house music, until 1998/9 when trance re-emerged from
the underground. After a few years he started to look towards the
harder side of dance music, and started playing out in clubs all around
Northern Ireland in 2001. One year later, he was asked to mix live on
Cool FM (97.4FM), and subsequently again in 2004 along with one of his
mash-ups featuring in the stations weekend playlist for 4 months.
It wasn't until
late in 2004 when Chris'
tastes in music matured and he started his first residency exclusively
playing house music, mostly funky and soulful. Since then he hasn't
looked back.
2006 was the
year he and fellow DJ Barry
Swanston joined forces and started producing music under the alias of
'Masatoshi & Swanston'. Their first single had its Ibiza debut
during the summer of 2006 and was released on Soldier Without Fortune
Recordings. This in turn led to Chris being asked to remix for Salford
Central Records at the beginning of 2007. In the same year Chris had
two solo releases and one Masatoshi & Swanston release on
Soldier Without Fortune Recordings, the Newtownards Chronicle dubbed
Masatoshi & Swanston as Northern Irelands top house duo and the
pair were also featured in The Belfast Telegraph. On top of that, Chris
was interviewed live on Citybeat (96.7FM) as part of their Friday night
'Whats in you box' feature. He ended the year off well by entering a DJ
competition in Mint in his hometown (MintBangor.com) and winning.
2008 proved to be a good year with another two solo releases on Soldier
Without Fortune Recordings and one Masatoshi & Swanston release
on Teknoloji Records. Chris was invited back to Citybeat in May for
another live interview regarding an unofficial remix of his that they
had been playing. He closed the year by coming 2nd in the Northern
Ireland final of the Movida Corona World DJ Competition by a handful of
points.
