Promoting from the age of 16 back in the early rave days of 1991, Christian Lewis has had his fair share of nights out. He co-promoted “Destiny The Cream” on his father’s pier and pulled in crowds of up to 5000 clubbers across seven different music zones at all night parties. DJ’s such as Carl Cox, John Digweed, Pete Tong, Mr C, LTJ Bukem, Darren Emerson, Nick Holloway, Groove Rider and Fabio were just some of the then up and coming jocks to grace the decks. With live acts such as The Prodigy, it was no wonder “Destiny The Cream” was voted 4th best club in Mixmag.
Having gained a vast knowledge of the dance scene watching the big name DJ’s rock his parties, Christian decided to spin records himself. Having picked up early experience and confidence from playing at his own parties he went on to refine his mixing skills by practicing day in day out with fellow DJ’s.
Not content with solely spinning tunes, Christian chose to set up his own recording studio and produce dance music with various musicians. 1999 saw the birth of his record label “Intrinsic Records” which has proved to be a huge success and still stands in this bleak time in the music industry. Tracks signed to the label have made their way on to various CD compilations, including CD compilations by Ministry of Sound, Renaissance, Global Underground and Bedrock to name but a few. Intrinsic Records is now well established and has gained the support from the premier league DJ’s, with airplays on various radio stations around the globe, including plays on Radio One from the likes of Sasha, and plays by John Digweed on London’s Kiss FM.
2004 saw Matt Slater (Intrinsic’s first signing) become a joint partner in Intrinsic Records Limited. This has led to the birth of a new breaks label “Ruthless Recordings”. With a funky house label on the horizon, the future is looking busy for the Intrinsic partnership.
Musically, Christian can cater for most occasions, he has played at a variety of parties with musical tastes ranging from: classic balearic sets, to quality funky house sets, to pumping progressive/tech house sets and most recently nu skool breaks sets. Christian has put on, and played at his own “Intrinsic” parties at the Ministry of Sound in London. Plus, played for Renaissance, Cream, Turnmills, The Escape Club and The Beach Club in Brighton, Melonphunk in London, Starfucker at Herbal in London’s Shoreditch and Laguna in Poland to name just few… Over this time Christian has played along side such legends as: Brandon Block, Peace Division’s Clive Henry, Gordon Kaye, Quivver’s John Graham, Phil Thompson (Bedrock) and Ashley Casselle...
You can currently catch Christian in the mix at his residencies: “People”, which is on the last Friday of every month at Snafu23 in Hove where you can hear him playing quality funky house sets, or if you prefer classic house, catch him playing for Kinkymalinki at the Zap in Brighton.
Possessing a firm knowledge of the past and the present Christian’s dance floor friendly sets will please crowds the world over. With the digital revolution upon us more and more DJ’s are choosing to ditch their vinyl and use computer based programmes such as Ableton Live, Christian welcomes this new era and will soon be playing whole sets just from Ableton Live…
