| Profile: |
Alex Porter is
from St.Helens, Merseyside in
North West England and has
been
professionally on the dance music circuit since 1993.
It was back in the year of 1988 whilst still at school, that a friend
passed Alex a tape
that had been given to him by his older brother. The tape happened to
be by Hacienda resident DJ’s Mike Pickering and Graeme Park.
One listen and Alex was hooked and his love of dance music was born.
Having left school, he started to attend famous clubs like Quadrant
Park in
Livepool, Legends in Warrington and The Pleasure Drome in Farnworth. It
was at the last mentioned where Alex first became intrigued with the
work
of the Resident DJ, Welly. On his 17th Birthday he managed to scrape
enough
money together to buy his first set of turntables and began honing his
skills in his bedroom on his brand new 1200’s.
Alex has to admit that he was no natural and it took him a good 3-4
months before he was even
able to beat match! He played all the Italian House Classics and
Dutch and Belgian Techno in those early days.
Having spent a good few years perfecting his trade, Alex started to put
on
nights with a friend at his Student Union in Stoke in 1993-94. HE then
began a short residency in his hometown of St.Helens, at a nightclub
called Crystals in 1995. The owners wanted to move the music policy in
another direction and he sadly left the club in late 1995.
Alex moved back into the bedroom for the best part of 2 years as he
struggled to find
work. He actually fell out love with the music in the late
90’s as he was disappointed with some of the sounds being
produced and it wasn’t till the summer of 2001 and a trip to
Ibiza that his love of house music was re-ignited. He began to start
purchase music again and was approached by the owner of a Bar called
Westfields in St.Helens, to put on an Old Skool night.
The night ran for 2 years mainly on Bank Holiday weekends and proved
hugely popular.
It however sadly came to end when the Bar changed ownership and the new
owners didn’t want to continue with the night. Alex returned
to
Crystals for a short spell in 2004, but left after 6 months due to a
disagreement over the music policy. he was then approached by the
manager
of The Assembly Bar in 2005, to work Saturday and Sunday nights playing
the music which he had become hooked on – Funky House. The
nights ran into mid 2005 before unfortunately the bar went into
liquidation.
Alex returned to Westfields Bar, St.Helens at the end of 2005
were he has been the regular Saturday night resident DJ to date,
promoting my night “ Heavenly Disco”. Being able to
play 6 hour sets, he has been able to develop his sound and now
incorporates Soulful, Funky, Jackin and Classic House into my sets.
Alex is heavily influenced by producers such as Grant Nelson, DJ Meme,
Richard
Earnshaw, Jamie Lewis, Joshua Heath, Olivier Desmet and many many more.
He has also put on other special one off nights such as Old Skool and
70’s Soul, Funk and Disco celebrating the music of the great
Larry Levan and The Paradise Garage, New York. and he hopes to move
into music production in the future and continue to spread his love of
House
Music.
